Master Data Exports Now Download as .XLSX (Instead of .XLS)

Overview

Master data exports and many Excel-style downloads have been updated to generate .XLSX files by default (replacing the legacy .XLS format). This improves compatibility with modern Excel features, automation, and upload/update workflows especially where .XLSX is required.

What is it?

When you export master data (and other Excel-based outputs) from the system, the exported file is now produced in Excel Open XML format (.XLSX) rather than the older .XLS format.

This aligns exports with the system’s Excel import/update workflow, which relies on working with Excel templates and uploaded Excel files.

Why it matters?

.XLSX exports reduce friction and data handling issues in common client workflows:
  • Better upload/update compatibility: Many update flows depend on editing an export and uploading it back through the Excel Update function; having exports already in .XLSX reduces format-related failures.
  • Modern Excel reliability: .XLSX is the current standard for Excel and is generally more dependable for formulas, encoding, and structure compared to older .XLS files (particularly when moving between tools).
  • Smoother “export → edit → update” cycle: The knowledge base workflow explicitly encourages exporting current data first, editing it, and then uploading it back to apply updates this change makes that cycle more consistent.

How it works

You don’t need to change anything in your process:
  1. Navigate to the relevant area (for example, a master file list or a report).
  2. Click the Excel option/icon to download your data export.
  3. The downloaded file will now be in .XLSX format.
  4. If you’re making changes, you can edit the exported file and then use the system’s Update option to upload the modified Excel file and apply changes.
This matches the documented workflow:
  • Export current data
  • Edit the spreadsheet
  • Upload via Update to apply changes

When is it needed?

Use (and benefit from) this update anytime you:
  • Export master data to make bulk updates, then upload changes back using the Excel Update workflow.
  • Need exports that open cleanly in modern Excel versions and integrate better with other tools and processes.
  • Want to avoid format mismatch issues where uploads/templates are expected to be .XLSX.
