[Copilot Studio] Configure and Connect to Counta AI Connector
Overview
Counta AI Connector, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), lets Microsoft Copilot work with your Counta data through natural language. It reads master data, transactions, and reports across jobs, clients, billing, profitability, WIP, expenses, media, general ledger, and time, and it supports creating and updating time entries.
The connector respects your Counta permissions and access controls. Each user connects with their own Counta login and works within what their Counta User Access Group allows.
Before you begin
- A Copilot Studio license that allows creating agents.
- A Copilot Studio license that allows publishing an agent to channels such as M365 Copilot and Teams.
- The connection values for your environment, provided by Counta with your Client ID and Client Secret.
- Your Counta Tenant ID and an active system username and password.
Set up the connector (Admin)
Create the tool
- In Copilot Studio, go to Tools and click "New tool".
- Select Model Context Protocol
- Enter the following:
- Server Name - "Counta Staging" or "Counta Production"
- Server Description
- MCP Server URL for your environment:
- Staging: https://api-staging.accountabilityoneeu.com/v1/mcp
- Production:
- Under Authentication, select OAuth 2.0, then Manual
- Populate the following fields with the values provided by Counta:
- Client ID
- Client Secret
- Authorization URL
- Token URL
- Refresh URL
- Scopes can be left blank
- Click "Create."
Register the Redirect URL with Counta
- Open the connector, go to the Security tab, and copy the Redirect URL. I looks like https://global.consent.azure-apim.net/redirect/...
- Send the Redirect URL to Counta. Counta registers it so sign-in can complete.
Until Counta registers the Redirect URL, the first sign-in attempt will fail.
Connect
- Click "Create connection". The Counta sign-in page opens
- Enter your Tenant ID.
- Enter your Counta system email address and password (or API token), and authorize.
Share with your organization
Share the connector with specific employees or choose "Add everyone with the role Can use". This allows selected employees in your organization to add the tool to their own agent(s).
Each user still signs in with their own Counta login, so everyone works under their own system permissions.
Add the connector to an agent
- Open your agent, choose Add, select Model Context Protocol, then Counta AI Connector, and Add and configure.
- Under the agent's Tools, you can require confirmation before an action runs. We recommend requiring confirmation on write actions.
Connect to and chat with Counta AI Connector (End Users)
Once your Admin has shared the connector and added it to an agent:
- Open the agent.
- When prompted, sign in with your Tenant ID, your Counta email and password (or API token).
- You now work under your own Counta permissions and can retrieve or write data based on your permissions.
